And now for something completely different!
I always enjoy a challenge, so when Ash asked me to photograph him doing his fire poi I was well up for it. He had a very specific photograph in mind that he wanted, so it was a case of him playing with patterns while I tweaked exposure levels and so on in the ever changing light until we got it right. It took a while, because he didn't know what patterns he was making until he saw them on the back of the camera… It's a wonderful thing, slow shutter speed!
While Ash was after a perfect pattern (which we did eventually achieve), I was after something which showed the fire paintings but also had something of him in them. I loved the intensity and concentration in his eyes, and I was after capturing that, despite the constant movement in the dark.
And when I looked at them later, I also loved how this collage looked together, with an idea of Ash there in the middle but trails of firelight in the darkness.
All in all in was a fun and challenging evening for both of us! Same place same time next year, but he's hoping to have some new L.E.D. 'toys' by then so I'm looking forward to the next challenge!
