I never thought I would take to lurchers so much! I've never really been involved with them much before: we didn't have lurcher racing at the Country Shows last year and I wasn't much interested before that! However, this season the team from Lure Crazy have taken over and it has become a fast moving, well organised and very exciting event!
Lurcher hurdling is where two dogs race against each other over a series of about four low hurdles. The winners then race other winners until you are left with a champion. With the long jump (yes - i had visions of a sandpit being raked over every time…) It's just that - a long jump made up of consecutive, close together small hurdles - addedto every time the dog clears it. It's fascinating watching the different techniques: some jump long and low, while others just fly at about five foot off the ground! then there are those who decide it's not for them and it's a hop skip and crash through the middle.
All in all, it's a great sport to watch and photograph and I spend many a happy hour at
each show, sitting at the end of the run and feeling the wind as they whistle past me. I have been warned that one will land in my lap one day, but hey! As long as I get the shot!
Loads more lurcher pictures here if you're interested. Or come along to a Country Show sometime and see for yourself!
